CORNER STONE
Of St. Paul's Episcopal Church Laid with Impressive Ceremonies
The corner stone of St. Paul's Episcopal Church was laid this afternoon in
the presence of a large number of visitors and citizens. The parish in this
city was founded 61 years ago, and the first church edifice was erected in
1839.
The main entrance will be on Eleventh Street and will open in a spacious
vestibule connecting with the auditorium, and in a semi-circle near the door
will be placed the baptistery. Nearly 400 people can be seated in the
auditorium and the chancel, where seats ae to be provided for the choir.
On the Market Street side, the structure is to be greatly beautified by a
tower 70 feet high of exquisite proportions and handsomely embellished with
carved work. In the tower is to be located the rector's study, a large room
provided with all conveniences, and in the rear of this will be the choir
room. The dimensions of the building are 72 feet front, 92 feet long and 36
feet high in the main building.
About four years ago (the church) purchased the lot, 100x120 feet, and one
of the most eligible for the purpose in the city, and since that time they
have been bending every energy to securing the fund for the church.
An effort will be made by the congregation to get the structure under cover
this fall in order that the dedicatory exercises can be held next Easter
Sunday.
