In the Fall of 1864, a military commission was convened in Indianapolis to
try the following individuals for treason: Horace Heffren, William A.
Bowles, Andrew Humphreys, Lambdin P. Milligan and Stephen Horsey. Together
with a number of men from other states, they conspired as members and
officers of secret societies such as the Order of American Knights or Order
of Sons of Liberty to overthrow the government of the United States.
