Paoli (IN) Republican, February 10, 1915, p. 5.
According to the New Albany papers, the old New Albany and Vincennes
turnpike extending from Paoli to New Albany is now a free road. For more
than 75 years all persons who traveled that road were called upon to pay
toll, but several years ago Orange County purchased that portion of the road
lying within its boundaries, and since then Washington and Floyd counties
did likewise, and a few days ago Harrison County purchased the small part
lying within that county and orders were received to take down the last one
of the toll gates, the one at Palmyra. The only toll road left in Indiana
is that part of the New Albany and Corydon Pike within Floyd County, about
eleven miles.
