Bedford (IN) Weekly, August 15, 1901, p. 3.
Washington, Indiana, August 12-Frank Purcell, the accused wife murderer,
pleaded not guilty to the charge before Justice Kellems this afternoon. He
waived preliminary hearing and was bound over to the circuit court. Being
unable to furnish bond in the sum of $2,500, he was remanded to jail.
Before leaving the justice's office, he dramatically declared his innocence
and said he would be able to prove by eye witnesses that when he went to the
barn he did not strike or kick his wife; that a cow knocked her down and
trampled upon her making the bruises that were found during the post mortem
examination.
