THE OFFICE OF THE HOPE INDEPENDENT BURNED
Special to the Sentinel: Columbus, Indiana, March 22-A destructive fire
occurred at midnight last night at Hope, a town about 14 miles northeast of
this city. It was the burning of a two-story frame building belonging to
Foss Howe. The second story was occupied by the Masons, and a back room by
the Hope Independent, a Republican newspaper. The ground room was occupied
by a saloon. The entire building was destroyed. Mr. Howe's loss is about
$2,000; insured for $1,600. The loss to the Masons is about $800, and to
Mr. Clouse, the editor of the Independent, about $500. The last two were
not insured. The fire was supposed to have been the work of an incendiary.
