West Baden Springs (IN) Journal, December 22, 1896, p. 1.
Jud (consider Judd as a spelling variant) Thompson was paroled from the
prison south in Jeffersonville last week. He came there a year ago to serve
five years for the killing of George Leonard at West Baden. The two were
hackmen and quarreled, and Thompson shot him. He was tried twice and the
jury failed to agree. Then the prisoner was taken to Bedford where the
sentence was inflicted. Thompson made a good convict and was employed most
of the time at the residence of Warden Hert. Gov. Matthews pardoned him
because he thought Thompson had acted in self-defense.
