LAWLESS WHITE CAPS
The Indiana Regulators Still Making Raids and Using the Whip
New Albany, Indiana, May 5-There seems to be no falling off in the
reformatory zeal of the Southern Indiana whitecaps. Wednesday night they
went out on another corrective expedition and, before they had finished the
night's work, had given 40 strokes with the hickory switches upon the bare
body of Mrs. Peter Denton because she was immoral and disreputable, had tied
William H. Toney to a telegraph pole and given him a 100 lashes because he
was generally drunken and worthless, and had given 40 lashes to a A. J.
Goodman because he loafed around saloons and let his wife go out and support
him. Then these muscular evangelists left a notice for insertion in the
local paper to the effect that to any man who in the pending political
campaign used money, treated to drinks, or in any manner attempted to
corrupt the ballot, 200 lashes would be given, while for aggravated offenses
of this character, 300 would be the dose.
