ALTON
John W. Emmick was born in Spencer County, November 7, 1842, and died at
Alton, Sunday, January 20, 1918, as a result of a paralytic stroke on
January 15. He was married to Christina Peckinpaugh December 25, 1866, and
to this union was born one daughter, Miss Maude of this place, and one son,
Dr. Tom of Mt. Vernon who, together with his wife, survive him. Mr. Emmick
was a civil war veteran having served as lieutenant in the 1st Ohio Cavalry.
He was a member of F. & A. M. Lodge No. 202 which officiated at the funeral.
The body was interred Tuesday afternoon at the Flower Point Cemetery. Among
the many sterling qualities and virtues of Capt. Emmick, there is one so
rare and fine as to be worthy of especial mention, that was his love for and
his great kindness to animals. His home was a refuge for all "strays." If
the dumb creatures he befriends could testify, he would have a funeral
oration worthy of the great kindness in his heart. Those who mourn his loss
have the sympathy of the entire neighborhood of friends.
