Salem (IN) Republican Leader, November 1, 1889, from a transcribed book of
early obits at the genealogy library at the John Hay Center, Salem, Indiana.
Whereas certain persons have published that E. W. Cadwell did foreclose a
mortgage on the home of Margaret Tatlock while she lay on her dying bed and
did then preacher her funeral, etc.; Now we, the undersigned, desire to
state the facts in the case: Her children, having a greater interest in the
comfort of their dying mother than in what they might ever receive from the
property, advised and urged her to make arrangements to get something out of
the place while it would do her the most good. That the children were in
sympathy with Mr. Cadwell in all that he did is evidenced by the fact that
they requested him to conduct the funeral services. In the month of June,
Mrs. Tatlock sent for E. W. Cadwell and requested him to furnish her money
to pay a housekeeper and buy medicines and other things needful for her
comfort. This he consented to do and furnished a coffin for her burial.
This is money loaned with the lot given by deed as security, an agreement
being executed binding the holder of the deed to pay to the heirs whatever
amount is received out of the place more than E. W. Cadwell has paid for the
benefit of Mrs. Margaret Tatlock.
