SIX OPERATORS ARE BUSY
At Eureka Exchange, Handle 2,746 Calls from 6 AM to 8 PM
300 During Night
That the Eureka Telephone Exchange at this place is a busy institution is
shown by the following figures. On Tuesday of this week from six o'clock in
the morning until eight o'clock at night, six operators handled 2, 746
calls.
The night operator goes on at eight o'clock, and he handled from that time
until six o'clock in the morning 300 calls, making a total of 3, 046 calls
handled during the entire day. Each call means that two plugs must be
inserted in the switchboard making a total of 6,092 plugs handled. In
addition to handling these plugs, there was probably many arguments to
settle during the day, for the most of the people that call central are
usually in a hurry, and the telephone girl is supposed to be an information
bureau telling instantly anything from the time of day to when the next
train leaves, the price of eggs or who died at some remote point in the
county.
