WORK ON GOVERNMENT DAM
Will Begin about April 1, about 700 Men Will Be Employed
Prospects for the early resumption of work on Dam 43 on the Ohio River at
New Boston, this county, will probably begin about April 1, according to the
United States engineers in charge. When work was suspended on December 22,
last, 700 men were turned off.
John Kraft of New Albany has charge of the fire department at the dam and
has been at that place during the winter as has Ed Hild, a former resident
of this place who is in charge of the electric light plant. During the
recent high water, the coffer dam was submerged but little damage was done,
and the work will progress rapidly as soon as the men return.
Dam 43 is the only dam on the Ohio River system that has not been awarded to
contractors, and the work is all being done under the supervision of army
engineers. Money to carry on the work is being apportioned by the war
department.
