A WAY BACK
The records of Clark County now on file in the Recorder's Office show that
the City of Jeffersonville occupies the site of what in 1777 was called Fort
Steuben. The city was laid out in 1802 after a plan suggested by President
Jefferson. The lots between Market streets (sic) and the river were the
same then as now, but the balance of the original plat of the city was laid
out into squares, every other one of which was intended for a public park.
From this we opine that Jefferson's idea was to provide many
places of
resort that weary mortals after their day's labor might find a lovely
spot
to rest.
