Clark County, Indiana
According to information noted on Wikipedia at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winfield_Scott_Stratton, Winfield Scott
Stratton was born in July 22, 1848, in Jeffersonville, Clark County,
Indiana. In 1891 he discovered a goldmine near Victor, Colorado and became
a millionaire in 1894. The webpage as noted above includes a biography,
pictures, references, and links to additional information.
On November 8, 1902, after the death of Stratton earlier that year, a news
article appeared in the Colorado Springs (CO) Gazette-Telegraph in response
to an article by Richard Work. Work was identified as a newspaper man of
Jeffersonville, and his article appeared in the Denver (CO) Post on October
13. It painted a very negative picture of Stratton and his relationship
with people in Jeffersonville.
The article in the Gazette-Telegraph was a very lengthy response to Work's
article written by various people in Jeffersonville who had known Stratton
well. The article contains a picture of Stratton, identifies Stratton's
father as Myron Stratton and two of his sisters as Mrs. Hamlin of
Jeffersonville and Mrs. Cobb. It was additionally noted that Work was only
ten years of age when Winfield Stratton left Jeffersonville and, therefore,
never really knew him and was not qualified to speak poorly of him.
