JEFFERSONVILLE
Death of Annie Hand-Her Betrayer at Large
Correspondence of The Sentinel
Jeffersonville, Indiana, Nov. 4-This place is much excited today over the
death of Annie Hand, the girl who took arsenic alleged to have been given
her by William Hughes for the purpose of producing an abortion, and the
release of her seducer. The poor girl was buried in the paupers' burying
ground. Mr. Rakstraw, a stepbrother of the deceased, went before the mayor
yesterday and filed an affidavit for murder against Hughes. It will be
remembered the Justice Keigwin arrested Hughes Saturday on the charge of
murder and committed him to jail without bail. Yesterday morning Keigwin
sent an order to the county jail ordering the release of Hughes, and he was
let out of jail since which time nothing has been seen of him. The marshal
is on the lookout but has not gained any clue as to Hughes whereabouts. The
case against Hughes was nollied last Saturday and a new case has been filed.
