CONVICT KILLED
[Special to the Cincinnati Commercial]
Jeffersonville, Indiana, November 7-This evening at four o'clock, John
Crawford and John Burchel, convicts in the Southern Penitentiary, both from
Evansville for burglary, while at work in the cooper shop, seized a ladder
and ran to the low wooden wall on the west side and went over it on the
ladder. Burchel was captured, but Crawford, refusing to halt when commanded
to do so by the pursuing guards, was shot through the lungs and heart and
instantly killed.
