The mussel industry on the Ohio River has its dangerous features. On
Wednesday, September 24, 1903, Felix Mode, who was "musseling" for shells
near the Diamond Rock, not far from Fredonia Landing, was caught by the
brail and thrown into the water. The weight of the brail caught in his
clothes and pulled him to the bottom where he drowned. Later his body was
recovered. Probably this was the first life lost in musseling.
