SOLEMN OBSEQUIES
FOR THOMAS B. Rader TODAY
Large Numbers Viewed Remains Lying In State At City Hall This Morning
Order of Procession and Services This Afternoon At Church And Grave
UNIVERSAL TRIBUTE OF REGARD
News, 16
Early this morning there was a mustering of the Uniform Rank, Company No. 9,
Knights of Pythias, for the purpose of bearing a part in the obsequies of
the late Thomas Bogle Rader whose remains will be laid to rest in beautiful
Walnut Ridge cemetery this afternoon after this paper is already on the
streets.
It was by wish of the deceased that the chief position in the laying of
himself in his last resting place was given to this body and other orders to
which he belonged recognized the prior right of the Uniform Rank, of which
Mr. Rader was for 18 years the Captain, to this melancholy honor and duty.
Within the city limits the fire department this morning sprinkled all the
streets over which the funeral cortege would at any time have to pass while
a like service was arranged for beyond the limits to the graveyard. It was
about 9:30 when Company 9 left the Armory for their march to the home of the
deceased man at 1122 Spring Hill and soon after 10 the procession passed
down Spring Street on its way to the City Hall. The drum corps led, followed
by the Uniform Rank in full uniform and then the hearse flanked by the six
active pall bearers, chosen from among the number of the Company, as
follows: Charles F. Aniz, Fielding L. Wilson, Lee Sylvester, William B.
Tnornley, James Applegate, Orlando L. Chandler.
At the City Hall the casket with the body was placed in the Mayor's office.
The flag outside the building was at half mast, the front of the building
and the interior were draped in black, the room in which the dead was laid
was smothered with flowers which made the death chamber fragrant with their
sweet odor. The catafalque was between the two rooms that constitute the
Mayor's office and people viewing the remains passed in at the front door
and out at the back. The flowers were in banks all around and beyond the
body was the pro trait of the deceased, also draped in funeral hues. The
body lay in full view, in the simple casket, robed in the uniform of his
much loved Company 9, and members of the Company stood on guard before the
doors, at head and foot of the casket, and placed about the room and the
hall.
It was a sober but imposing ceremony. Simplicity was the ruling keynote of
the situation but as one stood across in the Clerk's office one could
observe that many as they out from their last sight of the dead were wiping
away a tear from their eyes, while not a few almost entirely broke down.
The lying in state concluded at 2 o'clock and the line of march to the
church and to the grave was drawn up, the service commencing at 2:30. At
1:30 the City Council met for the adoption of resolution of respect, and to
join the funeral procession afterwards. The NEWS went to press before the
procession left the hall but the arrangements made by Marshal F. E. Andrews
for the occasion were as below. The fire bells were tapped morning and
afternoon in token of respect to the dead.
Procession forms at 2 o'clock outside the City Hall in Market Street in the

The body was met at the City Hall by the Rev. J. B. Butler who conducts the
service at the church, and the procession followed the route here given.
From the City Hall out to spring, out Spring to Maple, out Maple to
Locust,
out Locust to Morton Chapel. After the services at the church the line of
march will be in the same order via Locust to Court avenue, in Court to
Spring and out Spring to the graveyard at Walnut Ridge. It is intended that
the cortege shall return to Court avenue and Spring before disbanding.
The order of service at the church will be as follows:
Song, by the choir
Prayer
Scripture reading
Song, the choir
Addresses, J. J. Brock on "The Business and Public Life of Mr. Rader." W. W.
Cain "Fraternal Life of Mr. Rader."
Rev. J. B. Butler
Song, by the choir
At the grave the service will be in the hands of Hope Lodge no. 13, K of P.
Other lodges will have the opportunity to perform the ritual of their
orders, but it is understood that they will not avail themselves of the
privilege.
One mistake made in the notice of Mr. Rader's death Wednesday may be
mentioned. It was understood that he had but recently joined the church
whereas he was a member when 17 and an active worker. What happened a few
weeks ago was that he deposited his card at Morton chapel not having
previously done so at any church in this city.
The following amongst others came to Jeffersonville for the Funeral: Will
Thornley and Mat Dolan form Decatur, Will Wilson from Terre Haute, W. W.
Ross from Butler, Pa., Charles Hopwood from Columbus, Ind., Ed Schann form
Lexington, KY., John Biggert from Pullman, Ill., all being members of the
Unformed Rank. Representatives of the insurance companies represented here
by Mr. Rader, were expected to be present."
I plan to be in Clark county early in May just before the NGS conference
down the road in Cincinnatti!

Subject: [IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL] Administrative: Feedback Requested
Hello,
The IN-SOUTH-CENTRAL Rootsweb list is now about five weeks old with nearly
150 subscribers. The format of information sent to the list is probably a
little different than that seen on many of the lists. Do you find the
content helpful? Interesting?
When clippings are sent to the list, I've tried to include the county of
primary interest. Is this helpful?
What else would you like to see on this list? If I'm unable to do it due
to
time or distance, perhaps someone else can.
