Jemima Staggs Webb filed a pension claim on behalf of her son Alva Staggs who died of
wounds in Ashland, KY during the Civil War at the battle of Gladesville, VA (her 2nd son
to die in the war...son William died in 1862 of typhoid fever in Lexington, KY). Anyway,
to get the pension, she had to give evidence that Alva's father was dead. According
to her son John Staggs (who the pension records describe as a severe epileptic who was
"slow of mind"), John accompanied his father George W. Staggs (yes, W was the
middle initial) to visit George's brother Joshua (possibly Josiah, it's hard to
read) in Nelsonsville, Indiana on the Wabash river. John states that while visiting,
George died on December 20, 1854. I cannot find any reference to a place called
Nelsonsville in Indiana, but there are a number of Staggs families from KY and Virginia
who settled in several Indiana counties on the Wabash River. I just thought I would pass
that along...it clears up some details. I cann!
ot find any records of where George is buried, but he definitely was buried in Indiana
according to the files.
Does anyone know where this Nelsonville on the Wabash River in Indiana was at --
thanks
