Hi Colleen:
My great-great grandfather, Henry ROBINSON, was in Co. K, 100th Indiana.
He died of typho-malarial fever on 11 August, 1864 in a 'regimental hospital'
outside of Marietta, GA.
I have searched--off & on--since 1985 to find his place of burial. I know that the
body was not returned to his wife, Eliza Ann SELCH ROBINSON who lived in Middle Township,
Hendricks County, Indiana.
Eliza subsequently moved to Fairfield, Iowa, where she died some 20 years later. Her
monument has her info on one side, and the other side reads "Wife of Henry ROBINSON,
burried [sic] Marietta Georgia."
SO. He's not in Marietta National, Andersonville or Kennesaw Mountain.
You and I may never know. There were alot of undocumented burials, and burials for whom
documentation was lost. And then graves were moved... Embalming was for the wealthy, and
given the practices of the times, the body was probably buried pretty close to where the
soldier died.
I have copies of Henry's letters home that are now in the Indiana State Library. I
will re-read them to see if there's a mention of your ancestor, but I don't
believe so. Henry's letters were warm, but dealt with the family, and little about
the war. The men who were mentioned were men from the area with whom Henry had joined the
army. Your ancestor & mine were in different companies, as well.
There are two good regimental histories of the 100th Indiana:
Marches & Battles of the 100th Indiana Infantry by Capt. E.J. Sherlock (no index)
This book mentions your ancestor on page 327 in the roster of 'C' Co.:
Whitney, Edward--Killed, Missionary Ridge, Nov. 25,'63.
There is no index, and unless your ancestor was an officer or notable, it is unlikely that
there is any other mention. The only mention of my Henry is in the roster of 'K'
Co. I bought this book from Higginson Books (on line) for $42.50. It's a pretty good
read. Another good book on the 100th Indiana is:
With Sherman to the Sea by Theodore Upson (no index).
There are some good on-line military sources.
The VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator also has records for some state veterans
cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999 (
http://www.cem.va.gov/).
The navigator includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service
branch and rank if known, cemetery information and grave location in the cemetery.

Also search Google Books, and do a Google search for "100th Indiana."
Good luck, and let me know what you find.
I'm also desperate to find a photo of my Henry...
