Tony,
Thank you for your recent post. I have just now completed my inquiry to the
Indiana State Archives to get more information about John W. Wyatt who was
inducted into Company I, 14th Regiment Indiana Infantry on June 7, 1861,
Terre Haute, Indiana. I have the NARA service record information for this
person who died of an illness in a Cumberland, Maryland hospital June 13,
1862. I am attempting to get family information for John to determine if he
is my relative.
I also need to research the 1860 US census, Terre Haute, Indiana again to
determine if there are other John Wyatt enumerations. I have my John Wyatt
listed with his parents Phillip and Betsy and brothers Edward, Albert (my
ggrandfather), Walter and Adolphus.

I don’t think there is a repository for enlistment papers but there are
other
sources of information. The Indiana State Archives has a card file
for soldiers from Indiana. This is the description of what they have taken
from their website. The cards have been microfilmed and are available for
copying. The cards may contain information about the individual’s service,
including regiment and company, and in many instances the soldier’s age and
physical description, former occupation, nativity and any notes found in the
rolls, including promotions, medical conditions, and dates of death if
during service. You can contact the archives about these records at
http://www.in.gov/icpr/contact/
The other source of information is the Compiled Military Service Record
(CMSR) from
the National Archives. A description of this record along with
directions on how to request it can be found at
http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/military/civil-war/
