Have you looked in the Civial War Pension records indexes or military
indexes (they're available on Ancestry) or contacted NARA regarding
records for him?
http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/milordr.html for
information regarding those records.

I have a puzzle that I can't solve.
My GGgrandfather, George P. Weaver, was born in Nicholas Co,
KY @1810. I
have traced him to Indiana in the area surrounding Shelby
County. He was on
the 1860 census in Jackson, Co. IN, but there was a will filed
Nov 18, 1862
in Shelby Co. IN. There are other relatives in the area
including the widow.
Family tradition says he died in the Civil War. I don't know
which side,
since Shelby County, IN was split in sympathy over the war. I
have found NO
record of death in any county in the surrounding area. Anyone
have any
suggestions?
