Went to see Gods & Generals last night, and I have to say I was a little disappointed.
On the way, my husband said, "I don't know why you're so excited--every time
you've read the book first and then seen the movie, you don't like it." That
hadn't even occurred to me til he said it, but it has usually been true. This time I
was adamant that it wouldn't matter. On another CW mailing list, I was upset to see
people picking apart the movie "Gettysburg," because I loved it and thought that
it followed the book "Killer Angels" very well; I was determined NOT to go to
G&G and rip it to shreds for not following the book word-for-word. I know that
isn't possible with something so extensive and detailed, and I knew before I went that
they had cut over an hour from the movie because of its length. I don't want to give
too much away for those of you who plan to go see it, but if you really liked the book,
don't expect to absolutely LOVE the movie. You'll probably like it, but no!
t love it. I won't go so far as to say it wasn't any good at all, but it WAS NOT
the book I read! Apparently they had to edit out so much of it to shorten the time that
they took out some of the best stuff! Several of my favorite scenes in the book, and some
of ones I felt were most important to the story were completely left out. Still a good
movie, good battle scenes, etc. but not at all what I was expecting to see. I'm not
usually a whiner, honestly! Just my little review--don't let me stop anyone from
seeing it or liking it, but I had to complain JUST A LITTLE. My husband, who has not read
the book, thought it was great.
Just had to vent a bit!

PS>I was told that when the DVD version is released, it will be the full-length, uncut,
nearly six hour version. I'm hoping the parts that I expected to see last night will
be on the DVD!
