What an interesting photograph! It appears to be a group of military veterans in a
cemetery. A quick search on Ancestry indicates that Cornelius V. Tanner of Starke Co.,
Indiana possibly had two periods of Civil War service: 99th Regt. Indiana Infantry,
mustering out Jul '63 by reason of expiration of term of service; and with the 12th
Regt. Indiana Cavalry, Co. K, 1 Dec '64 - 10 Nov '65. He enlisted as a Pvt and
mustered out as a Corporal. Co. K was raised in Pulaski County. The photograph might be
commemorating a Regimental or Company reunion or a reunion of members of the Grand Army of
the Republic. The details of the photograph are not distinct enough for me to tell if the
tree trunk monument in the foreground is for an individual or a military unit, or if the
badge worn by one of the men is a GAR badge. Tanner died in 1926 so the photo logically
was taken before then. Civil War historians in that part of Indiana may be able to
provide more information.
