Colleen:
Thank you for the leads! It's so neat to communicate with a descendant of the same
regiment! I wonder if they were acquainted... Have you read "Marches & Battles
of the 100th Indiana Infantry" by E. J. Sherlock? Your gg grandfather is in the
book, but has no more elaboration than my Henry. On page 327, the Roster of Co. C reads:
"Whitney, Edward--Killed, Missionary Ridge, Nov. 25, '63."
I've puzzled over the Grave Locator web site, and even called Marietta National.
I've worked on transposing numbers & letters to see it the government could have
made a mistake (!).
The family lore says that Henry died in Andersonville, but his military records say that
he died in a regimental hospital in Marietta, Georgia. His wife's headstone in Iowa
says he's buried in Marietta, and that is, well--written in stone.
There is ONE 'Henry Robinson' buried in Marietta National Cemetery, but he was
with Co. B, 9th Iowa Infantry--and to be certain of that, I've researched the 9th
Iowa, and there was indeed a Henry Robinson. I've written to Andersonville National
Monument (many years ago) & to Kennesaw Mountain National Monument (that was the
battlefield most recent prior to Henry's death). I've also asked volunteers
on-line to double check Andersonville, and also recently called Marietta National Cemetery
& begged the woman to check the card file. The card file is Henry from Iowa. The
tombstone in Marietta is Henry from Iowa (from a volunteer at Find A
Grave.com) The
problem with Marietta is that it began with re-interments; the cemetery was not
consecrated until 1866--2 years after my Henry died, and there are 3,000 unknowns. But
these burials have not been verified with the original interment records.
When I was in Salt Lake City, I found some D.A.R. Bible records from the family of Erastus
Robinson, Henry's brother. THOSE records state that Henry died in Andersonville.
According to these Bible records, their brother, Charles was in Andersonville. I've
also researched Henry's regiment, the 100th Indiana, and no one in that regiment was
in Andersonville.
I will try the historian you recommended. Thanks so much for the resource. I'll
continue to chip away at this one. An obituary would be a wonderful thing, and would
probably note the burial place.
Thanks again,

My 2nd GGrandfather, Edward Whitney, was also in the 100th Indiana, Company
C. He died at Missionary Ridge, TN.
You might try this site, which is how I finally found his burial site.

Also, I found a very helpful historian from the National Park Service, he
was unsuccessful, but searched records of several cemeteries for me.
