Seeking additional information, especially obituary for William Banta (b. 1839 ? Indiana
d. June 13, 1902 in Martinsville, IN). Son of Cornelius Banta and Rebecca Eckels. William
married Elizabeth May on August 25, 1861 in Vermilion County, Illinois. He enlisted in the
Civil War as a captain of Company B in the 7th Indiana Infantry on September 1, 1861. At
the battle of Port Republic he was wounded by a shell. Rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel,
he was mustered out in September 1864. After the war he was an 1870 graduate of the
Medical College of Indiana. The 1890 Morgan County (Indiana) Enlistment of Soldiers shows
him living in Washington Township.
