Jacob Eley was my grandfather. He died in 1920 and is buried in MRE Cemetery west of
Berne, Indiana. He served in the Indiana 47th Infantry from 1861 through mid-summer 1865
and was in many battles in the Mississippi River fronts from Kentucky to Louisiana. He
was wounded twice and spent some time on a hospital boat and at a hospital in
Pennsylvania. Upon the end of his term, he reinlisted for 100 days to guard Confederate
prisoners in Tennessee. His brother JOhn also served with him in Tennessee.
Upon return to Indiana, he married Hannah White - five children before she died in
childbirth. He than married my grandmother, Hannah Baker, and they had 15 children, nine
of whom survived to adulthood. My father, Guy Eley, was one of them.
