To Whom It May Concern,
Many years ago I noticed a sign while driving on Route 37 from
Indianapolis to Bloomington with directions to a cemetery with the
name Sodom. It was in that area where Monroe County begins. I looked
for the sign off and on over the next few years, but it seemed to
have disappeared.
In the last years, during visits to Indiana University, I found the
time to look for the cemetery with greater care. The first attempt
went awry as I depended on my memory to direct me on the small roads
that cross cut the hilly region between Route 37 and Route 67. An
interesting drive, but no cemetery. The second time I took a map and
a camera and some friends and we found a cemetery in the right place,
but with no marker. It is a large field with old trees that looks
like it is mowed regularly. There are a number of grave markers still
there and I took some unsystematic photographs of the place and some
markers. It appears to have been active until the 1870s or 1880s.
There is no surviving church building nearby, there are metal grain
silos across the road and a well kept house to the north of the
cemetery field.
Does any one know the history of this cemetery or the church
congregation that used it? I am puzzled by the name --- one that is
usually not associated with virtue in Biblical circles.
This is not a genealogical search, it only a matter of personal curiosity.
Thank you to those who are keeping this list and I hope that someone
can be of help.
Sincerely yours,
John Gagnon
