Subject: I-69 Environmental Study
To the list:
Landmark Archaeological and Environmental Services, Inc. (Landmark) is a
consultant working on the I-69 Evansville to Indianapolis, Tier 1
Environmental Impact Study (EIS). As an integral function of the Tier 1 EIS
process, Landmark is attempting to identify cultural resources within a
series of proposed alternative routes in the following Indiana Counties:
Daviess, Gibson, Greene, Hendricks, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Marion, Martin,
Monroe, Morgan, Owen, Pike, Putnam, Sullivan and Vigo.
Landmark is working with a rather extensive Geographic Information System
(GIS) database and a wide variety of georeferenced data layers including a
fairly large number of previously recorded cemetery sites; however, it is
felt that there are probably many more early pioneer and or family
cemeteries on privately held lands that are not well known or documented.
Some of these historic sites and pioneer cemeteries may have the potential
for inclusion in the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures and
the National Register of Historic Places. It is our goal to identify and
include in the final Tier 1 EIS all such significant sites.
We would like to request research assistance from the some of the INPCRP
membership residing in and or familiar with pioneer cemeteries in
Southwestern Indiana. Our research is focused within 2-mile wide Study
Bands. Some of the counties in the above list are impacted by only one
proposed Study Band, while others may be effected by the combination of as
many as five. General County maps indicating the respective Study Bands are
immediately available to individuals by e-mail request. County maps are
supplied in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format.
For preservation groups and other organizations interested in assisting with
this research, we are providing more detailed USGS 7.5 minute topographic
maps in electronic format, also by county. The corresponding Study Bands are
overlaid and are being distributed on CD bundled with ArcExplorer, a
freeware GIS viewer. Known sites can be identified by topographic landforms
and map features, and the UTM coordinates may be picked and recorded using
the provided software. Alternatively, maps may be scaled, printed and
marked to indicate site locations.
As cemetery preservationists actively engaged in local and regional
fieldwork, the INPCRP group may be among the best able to point out obscure
cemeteries and other resources that may exist within the proposed Study
Bands. Cooperation in identifying the location of cemeteries will be
greatly appreciated and will serve to improve the quality of the Tier 1 EIS.
Requests for PDF county maps by return e-mail should be sent to me at this
e-mail address. Groups interested in acquiring data on CD or maps in paper
format may submit e-mail requests as well or may choose to contact me by one
of the means below.
Additional information about the I-69 Study may be found by following links
at the Landmark web site (URL below).
Please accept our thanks in advance for your valuable time and assistance.
Best Regards,
Rich Green
