Mark, I'm not really up on history that much, but
there was a large battle fought in Tippecanoe County
in 1811 between US troops and Native Americans. I know
there was a lot of unrest and many "battles" (some
large and some smaller squirmishes) in the area during
it's early settlement. It's possible the name of the
cemetery stems from a similar type of battle. There is
a page on Access Genealogy that's titled "Old
Battleground Cemetery Records, Indianapolis" but the
info on the page doesn't appear to have anything to do
with it:
