I have a 93 year old friend who has been doing cemetery readings since 1935,
Miss Thelma Murphy. She believes, the reason for the name, Old
Battleground, may go back to the beginning of the settling of Indianapolis,
when an Indian battle may have taken place in the area. I need to check into
it. It sounds logical.
I am glad I could be of help to you. This is an interesting place. Two
cemeteries, together, with a lady in the house in the back, that thinks she
should keep everyone visiting, off her driveway, which may have been the
road into the cemetery originally. Go figure???
This cemetery was completely restored in 2004 by John Walters, the best
cemetery restorationist in the business. Bob Alloway

Thank you Bob, you are very kind. I will revise my naming too, I am just
pleased that this has happened. Nelson was somewhat of a wierd Harold type
guy, pretty much hypochondriac, lazy bones etc but had enough gumption to
father about 12 children with 3 wives. My husband and I are talking of
taking a short trip in June to see these cemeteries this summer, we are
located between Topeka and Wichita in Emporia so it shouldn't be too
diffacult. I would love to meet you to go to the cemeteries. Thank you for
the pictures. I am a member of RAOGK but this is the first time I've
benefited from someone elses' goodness. Thanks again. Peggy Price

Peggy, I have McCoy photo's from Old Battleground and from Union
Chapel
cemeteries which are only a mile apart. Will have to send them to your
home
e-mail.. You can now stop calling the cemetery BATTLEFIELD, for it
is
BATTLEGROUND.
You mentioned your McCoy's came from Kentucky.. There you are! The few
McCoy's who were left behind shot it out at home!! I just know it!
L.O.L.
When you are ready to come to Indy for a "roots-tour", I will meet you
some
place and give you a tour of these two cemeteries, and whoever else
on
this
list wants to come.. Bob Alloway

Bob. Thank you for your kind offer. It may be more than you want to
tackle. My relatives who are buried in the Old Battlefield Cemetery begin
with James McCoy and his wife Malinda Allison McCoy. From my research I
have gathered that Malinda Allison was a daughter of John and Anna Gray
Allison who came to the present Indianapolis area from Kentucky.
James McCoy ( Yup there were McCoys there but not part of the
Hatfield/McCoy
ballyhoo) and his wife Malinda had some 7-8 children, one Nelson,
was my
ggrandfather. James ( no information) William married Jane Ingram and are
buried in Union Chapel, I have a picture of their headstone. Martha
Brunson,
Newton: no information, Julie Ann Rodecker, Nancy Orput and Mary
West. I
wonder though if Mary is not a sister of Malinda.
Nelson married Eliza Jane Harbolt and is buried in OBC with at least one
infant child. Her father William Harbolt is buried in OBC also.
If you could take only two pictures I'd want the one for Eliza and of
James
and Malinda McCoy. I would be ever so grateful.
Is this cemetery hard to get to, for out of staters? Thank you very much
for replying and for your help of the website, they are all on the list.
