Travis,
I have personally been in Marion National quite a few times looking for
stones of Civil War soldiers, and doing a inventory for the National
Cemetery Administration monument survey.
I have talked to the director and the caretaker at Marion, and have found
both very concerned about the current condition of the older sections in the
cemetery.
They have recently reset some markers, brought in dirt and reseeded areas in
the older section 1,with more planned for next year.
My gut feeling from talking to them is there just isnt enough manpower or
funds to keep the 8,000 plus stones and burials in top condition, all the
while trying to keep up with current burial demands.
And the story is correct, more needs to be done.
I am a cemetery restorer and have discussed various types of repairs and
techniques with the caretaker. They seem to be working at doing the "right
thing" on the older stones. I dont agree with their techniques totally but
understand the magnitude of the job to even keep up,so I have given them
some slack. And of course, they can order new replacements at any time when
the older stones are weathered and unreadable(which they should do)
Thanks for bringing this to the list.
If you have any questions you can reach off line at my email.

It is a shame that not only are veterans often neglected while
living,
apparently now even in death.
WASHINGTON -- Three years after Congress declared that national cemeteries
should
be awe-inspiring shrines to veterans, the federal government is
struggling to remove decades of blemishes and scars from military burial
grounds across the country, including one in Marion.
