Message Board Post:
Thanks for your post. I had a specific cemetary in mind when I wrote my post.
My great-grandmother's land in Vigo County ended at the levee of the Wabash-Erie
Canal. There was a small cemetary overlooking the levee. It had an iron fence around it
and maybe 6 graves. If memory serves, the graves dated from the 1830s.
My mom said vandals have since destroyed the cemetary.
I recall no names and don't know why the cemetary was located in the woods. We knew
about it because we played at the levee. There was no road or footpath to the location.
You just had to know where you were going.
I don't believe it is on the Vigo County geneaology site.
That's why I suggested the township trustee as a possible source of information.
There must be many tiny graveyards maintained or at least recorded at some point that are
located in woods, along streams, in tiny towns of pop 20.
If an ancestor lived in Vigo County and you know the township and haven't found a
grave through other sources, I suggest contacting the township government as an
alternative.
