The State Library downtown has a lot of information on the various cemeteries throughout the city. I seem to remember seeing a book on Greenlawn, but I don't believe it actually listed the graves moved. I think they moved graves in stages and not all at once. For example, all the prisoner's of war were buried there (Confederates from Camp Morton). They were exhumed and moved to Crown Hill. However, a monument listing all the names is located at Garfield Park on the southside. The Sexton at most cemeteries is very helpful in looking up records and you can normally correspond by email. They should also provide grave location in case you want to visit and it's definitely needed for Crown Hill which is huge.
I noticed the name in your subject line and put it into the burial locator at Crown Hill. There were five or six Costigan's listed as buried at Crown Hill, some as early as 1866. The state library also has an extensive collection of microfilmed newspapers and I believe the Indianapolis papers are indexed and filed in card catalog cabinets. The indexing is not very thorough, but might help if you don't have death dates. Otherwise you could look at the newspaper and perhaps find an obit. Obits didn't contain much detail until after the 1900s.

Thank you. I've looked at some old maps and see that the area became Greenlawn Park-- but that didn't seem to last too long. About 1890 Diamond Chain Company built on the site and their building and business still stand there today. Have you done any research on City Cemetery records at the State Library or where any records may exist?

All graves were moved from Greenlawn, either to Crown Hill Cemetery or Floral Park Cemetery (there is a Floral Park West Cemetery which is newer--I'm referring to the old Floral Park Cemetery located on Cossell Road). The relocations are in the Greenlawn Section of Floral Park. The websites for both are:
http://www.washingtonparkcemetery.org (Floral Park)
http://wwww.crownhill.org (under genealogy tab there is a burial locator search feature)

There is a cemetery that has burials from the Central State Hospital
(Indiana Insane Asylum) located on property to the west just across Tibbs
Avenue from the property. A wall included the names that are associated with
small grave plaques found in this cemetery.
There is also an unmarked cemetery in the NW corner of the property that
appears on early maps of the site; however, it is highly unlikely that any
graves in this area could be identified.

FYI I looked up the word phthisis and the dictionary says it means a
wasting away of the body or any of its parts; especially tuberculosis. I
guess it doesn't have to be TB, but a wasting away. My great grandfather
died of phthisis, as his death certificate said, and he didn't have TB. He
was taking a sum of money to the bank for a company in Boston, and was hit
over the head and the money stolen. He died from his injury. If your great
grandmother had post partum syndrome and was in an Insane Hospital, I can
understand what happened to her.
Just thought you might want to know.

I am wondering now if that isn't what happened with an ancestor of mine of mine who died in 1880. He is now buried at Crown Hill and their records state that his grave was moved. Crown Hill cannot tell me where it was moved from, now I wonder if it wasn't City Cemetery?
I lived in Indy for over 40 years and never heard of City Cemetery, does anyone know if there is a list of those that had been buried there and where it was located?
Thanks,
Jan B.

I am looking for the cemetary where Heildah Hulda McCartney was buried. Her husband was Thomas J and he died in the civil war in Peach Tree Creek GA.
She lived in Pike township of Warren co Indiana in 1870 and is not found in 1880. She was born in 1830 as an Ingram. Any information is appreciated!
