HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.
Vivian Bayley Shepard, 102, Hilton Head Island, S.C., and former resident of
Asheville, N.C., died May 3, 2014, in Hilton Head, SC.
Vivian was born Dec. 21, 1911, in Maunie, to the late Elbert Foster Bayley
and Annabelle Holland Bayley of Norris City. She graduated from Ridgway High
School, class of 1928. Upon graduation, she entered nursing training
atWalker Hospital, Evansville, Ind., class of 1932.
She married the late Arthur James Shepard Sr. of Evansville, Ind. Vivian and
Arthur became restaurateurs in 1953, beginning with a restaurant in
Weaverville, N.C., then The Embers in Waynesville, N.C., along with managing
restaurants in Morganton, N.C., and Hickory, N.C.
Vivian is the mother of the late Capt. Richard B. (Marsha Henry of
Shelbyville, TN) Shepard (USAFA) and her only living son, Arthur James (late
Elizabeth Wilkie) Shepard Jr. of Hilton Head Island, S.C.
She is also survived by her grandsons, Drs. Arthur James (Nicole Petersen)
Shepard III, Summerville, S.C., Brian Conley (Irma Bedrosian) Shepard PE. of
Ypsilanti, Mich., and Lt. Col. Ladd Wilkie (Dagmara Ann Pcion) Shepard, of
Hubert, N.C., Christopher Scott (Ashlea) Shepard, Murfreesboro, Tenn., and
Shawn Bayley (Kylee) Shepard of Amherst, Mass.; nine great-grandchildren;
nieces, Susie Kinsall, Anita McElroy, Susan Hake and Debbie Rick; and
nephews, Larry Bayley and Mike Bayley.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 12, 2014, at Union
Ridge Cemetery near Norris City.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Oteen
Baptist Church, Oteen, N.,C. or Hospice Care of the Low Country, Palmetto
Way, PO Box 3827, Bluffton, S.C. 29910.
