If any White County family researcher has traced a White County IL family
line called Mayes, Rutledge, Gowdy, Wallace, Orr, Grimes and/or Miller back
to the first decade or so of the 1th century, I would sure like to
correspond with you. I am specifically trying to clarify a story that was
told by Mrs. Margaret (Davis) Land, White County historian and genealogist,
about 5 orphan children whose parents (alleged to be Thomas/ Edward Mayes
and Susan/Susannah Rutledge) who died in Georgia and who were brought by
uncles to White County IL (probably Enfield) to be raised by other family
members. I have been looking for a source of this story and an accurate
version so I can complete my tree. I have seen at least two letters that
suggest somewhat different versions and persons involved. The father of
these orphan children varies across versions and the number of orphan
children changes, too.
Please e-mail me if you have any knowledge or interest in this issue. I
will share what I have found that makes me wonder.
Many thanks, in advance
