Francis has a military marker because he was in the Black Hawk War, Pvt.,
3rd Regt., 3rd Brig., IL Military Documents
Francis came from SC on horseback with a family named Brown to Randloph
County when he was 17 years old. He had 75 cents and a change of clothes.
Most of his money went to feed his horse. He had hoped to homestead but the
land was all taken. He worked until he could buy land from a first owner
then established a home for his bride. Was in army May 15, 1832 - August 17
1850 Fed Census District 7, Perry Co., IL, (Francis living beside John Ayre
SC age 50, William Brown SC age 55, William Brown Scotland 39, John Caswell
Scotland 45, John Campbell, John Ayre SC 28, James Ayre SC 26, Hugh
Campbell SC 31, Andrew Brown SC). Francis age 36 born in SC with wife Jane
and children Jane A., Robert A., William F. Value of real estate $600.
1860 Fed Census Township 6 S Range 4 W, Perry Co, IL Francis is missing. He
might be the last person on the previous page that has the wrong age.
Jennette Smith age 40 born in Ireland with children Jennette Smith, 18,
Francis Smith 10, James A. 9, Thomas 7.
1870 Fed Census Denmark, Perry Co, IL Indicates Francis farming with
Francis, Thomas, and Lewis as laborers. Thomas and Janette had attended
school. Jeanette indicates she was born in Ireland and is 18 years younger
than Francis. Estate valued at $9000 personal value $1800. Living beside
John Ayres and George Ayres.
1880 Fed Census South West Precinct.,Perry Co., IL Occupation Farmer,
widower. Parents from South Carolina. Sons James and Lewis live with him.
Son F W (Francis) lives beside.
1900 Fed Census Pinckneyville, Perry Co., IL son Thomas living indicates
father born in SC and mother in Ireland.
1910 Census Perry Co., IL Son Thomas is listed and states his mother was
born in Ireland and father in SC.
Her Headstone reads Jennet Smith died Jan 13, 1873.
Some census indicate she was born in Ireland others indicate South Carolina.
Family record indicates SC.
1870 Census name is Jennetta and born in Ireland.
Thanks for your suggestions. I haven't contacted the court house in Perry
Co. Not sure they can provide the missing information. They were married in
Randolph Co but I'm not sure their parent's names would be listed. In other
family lines, I have found patterns where children were named after
grandparents, then parents, then aunts/uncles. Their first female child
named Jane Ann maybe after mother (or possibly maternal grandmother as I
found a tree indicating Jane McHatton's parents were Alexander McHatton and
Jennei Smith). First male child named Robert Alexander - this could be a
combination of Francis' father's name and Jane's father's name or maybe
was Jane's father's full name. I have tried to consider leads with the
children's names but continue to end up with dead ends.

What sources have you used to find the info you have
so far? I think I do have Francis' wife's name at home
in my home computer and will check that later tonight
