Hi! I am researching the Phillips Family of Perry County (those that were in the Cudgetown
area). I was hoping somebody out there had the pieces of the puzzle that I don't
Here's what I am looking for:
1. What happened to John Phillips and his wife Sarah Lively after about 1852?
2. What happened to Mary J. Phillips after the 1870 Federal Census for Perry County?
3. Is Sarah Phillips buried in a small cemetery along side of Highway 154 between
Pinkneyville and US 51 HWY?
4. Would Cudge Davis be Augustus Davis.
Here's what I have:
John Phillips and Sarah Lively were married in 1843 in Randolph County. They had two
children between 1848 and 1852. They are Samuel and Mary J. After the children are born,
John and Sarah disappear from all records. I find Samuel and Mary J. in the 1860 and 1870
Federal Censuses for Perry County living in the Augustus Davis Household. Mrs Davis
appears to be an aunt to the children. Samuel married Mary Malinda Lively in 1878 in
Perry County and had several children. One of those children was Roy or William Roy, my
grandfather. Mary J. Phillips (Samuel's sister) disappears after 1870 and I can find
no trace of her.
Here's the family legend:
John Phillips abandoned his family and took off for parts unknown. A man named Cudge Davis
took the family in and went after John Phillips. He found him in the Beaucoup Bottoms and
killed him. He left John where he lay. John Phillips' wife, who was native American,
went back to this unknown tribe with two of her children while the other two were raised
by the Davis family. The legend also says that Sarah Phillips is buried in a small
cemetery south of the Highway 154 between Pinkneyville and US 51 HWY.
