I've "rescued" an old bible which originally belonged to the BUCHANAN Family
of Illinois. The bible was published in 1850 and contains Marriage, Birth,
Baptism, and Death records for this family from 1821 to 1901. It begins with
Volentine or Valentine J. BUCHANAN or BUCKANAN and his wife Sarah CRAIG and
their six children including, Melvina Isabella; Sarah Rebecca; Mahala;
William George; Melvin S.; and Carrie Josephine BUCHANAN. Other family
names mentioned include SHEETS, RICHARDS, and BOGGS. Based on limited
research I was able to gather the following information regarding the family
members identified in the bible:
Rev. Valentine J. BUCHANAN was b. 3 Sept 1826 in Lawrenceville, IL and he
died 13 Sept 1888 and is buried in the McKendree Cemetery in Georgetown, IL.
His wife Sarah CRAIG was b. 4 Jun 1821 in Circleville, OH to parents David
CRAIG (1776-1847) and Sarah GOWMAN (1788-1872). Sarah was one of 8 children
including, Mary Sarah; William; Rebecca; Anna; Elizabeth; Minerva; Sarah;
and Feraba M. CRAIG, all born between 1803 and 1824. Sarah married
Valentine BUCHANAN on 8 Jul 1847 in Vermillion Co., IN. Sarah died 16 Sept
1901 and is buried along with her husband in the McKendree Cemetery. The
couple had 6 children including, Melvina Isabella; Sarah Rebecca; Mahala;
William George; Melvin S.; and Carrie Josephine BUCHANAN all born between
1848 and 1866.
Their daughter Melvina Isabelle or Isabella or Isabell BUCHANAN was b. 12
Jun 1848 in Perrysville, IN and she married Mathias or Matthias T. or
William SHEETS (1843-1920) on 20 Dec 1866 and together they had at least
five children including, Hortense Estella; Frederick Buchanan; Mahala
Gertrude; Jessie Mildred; and Grace Alice SHEETS all born between 1868 and
1880. Melvina died 16 Feb 1919 in Georgetown, IL and she is buried along
with her parents in the McKendree Cemetery.
Matthias William SHEETS was b. 24 Nov 1843 in Danville, IL to parents
William SHEETS (1806-1879) and Elizabeth KYGER (1808-1894). Matthias was
one of five children born to this couple including Hines; Angeline; Daniel
M.; John McKendree; and Matthias William SHEETS all born between 1830 and
1843. Matthias died 19 Oct 1920 in Vermilion Co. IL and is buried along
with his wife and her parents in the McKendree Cemetery.
William George BUCHANAN was b. 4 Mar 1859 in Georgetown, IL and married
Margaret RICHARDS (1853-1930) on 9 Nov 1893 in Indianapolis, IN and he died
11 Jul 1936 in Cattin, IL and is also buried with family in the McKendree
Cemetery. His wife Margaret was b. 4 Jun 1853 in Georgetown, IN to parents
James M. RICHARDS (1823-1901) and Mary Ann KEPLEY (1828-1896). Margaret was
one of 11 children born to this couple including, Martha Jane; Mary Adeline;
Henrietta; Margaret; Isaac Marion; Maria; John K.; William T.; Lyman
Sylvester; Francis Edward; and Cynthia E. RICHARDS all born between 1848 and
1869. Margaret died 25 Sept 1930 in Vermilion Co., IL and she is buried
with her husband in the McKendree Cemetery.
Sarah Rebecca BUCHANAN was b. 26 Sept 1850 in Georgetown, IL and died 24
Sept 1933 in Georgetown, IL and is buried with family in the McKendree
Mahala BUCHANAN was b. in 1855 in Illinois and died in 1943 and is buried
with family in the McKendree Cemetery.
Melvin J. BUCHANAN was b. in 1862 and married Eliza J. CAMPBELL on 26 Sept
1895 in Vermillion, IN. Melvin died in 1945 and is buried with family in
the McKendree Cemetery.
I am hoping to locate someone from this BUCHANAN Family so that the bible
can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family,
or you know someone who might be, please contact me.
