On October 9, 1830, Caleb Cotton was named administrator for the estate of Levi Morris. He
was given the right to "administer all and singular the good chattles Rights and Credits of
the said Levi Morris.
I am searching for any information regarding this Caleb Cotton and Levi Morris. I also
have a question to post regarding administration of an estate. Could someone be named as
administrator even if the person of the estate was still living but may have been ill or
disabled?? Is it usually a relation of some kind that is made administrator of an estate?
Any help or ideas on these questions would be appreciated
Surnames: REED/REID ROUNDTREE
Submitter: Homer Weaver (hhwcw(a)accessus.net)
Date: 29 Oct 1998
I am lookimg for info or living relatives of my great grandparents; Geo Wilson Reed/Reid and Sarah A Roundtree. My grandmother, Martha Jane Reed/Reid was born at Grantsburg, Johnson Co., IL Oct 10, !879. I will share what I have.
Thought that I would list again my unattached Cotton/Cotten ancestor. I am searching
for information regarding the family of Caleb Joshua Cotton/Cotten born in the area of old
Rowan Co. North Carolina about 1782. From family tradition his father has been named as
James Cotton/Cotten. There is a census record for a James Cotton in Surry Co. NC 1800.
Caleb Cotton has a marriage bond in Surry Co. NC, 16 Nov 1801 to Nancy Meredith, witness was
William Meredith, bondsman was Thomas C. Burch. Caleb later moved to the area of Rutherford
Co. Tennessee near Nashville. He is listed in the census records of 1810. He is also listed
in records of both Rutherford Co. and Davidson Co. TN. He served in the war of 1812.
Sometime around 1820, he moved to the area of Southern IL. areas of Pope and Johnson Co.
where he is also listed in records and census. Caleb's father may have been associated in
the Cumberland area of North Carolina/Tennessee, as the names listed with Caleb in the
records of Tennessee were prevalent in this Cumberland area. There has been some family
theory that Caleb's father or grandfather may have been a Christian Missionary to the
Indians??? Caleb's mother may have been Cherokee or part Cherokee. In family tradition she
has been given the name of Blue Bird also known as Sarah Crouch/Gooch/Goochee??
Children of Caleb & Nancy (Meredith) Cotton/Cotten were Sarah, Malinda, Mahala, James,
Caleb Carrol, Noah Shelton, Nancy Josephine, Gabriel Lovoen, Elizabeth, Margaret Louisa,
Peninah Shropshire. Peninah is my GGgrandmother, she was born 12 Mar 1827 Vienna, Johnson
Co. IL and she was of Cherokee descent.
Any information regarding any of these Cotton/Cottens would be very much appreciated.

I am searching for the man who bought this tract of land. Does anyone have
any information on him that might help me get going on this line?
Last week I got into a conversation on the Virginia Roots list
about the circuit-riding preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lots of us have a Lorenzo
Dow 'Somebody' in our data. Since I have a lot of information about the
'original' Lorenzo Dow, they asked if I would post a web page about him. (He
was born in 1777 and died in 1834.)
Well, I ran home from work and put up the Lorenzo Dow page after
supper! I hope you find it interesting. He was something! I can just see
him jumping out of a church window onto a horse and riding away shouting
that he would be back one year from the day! He did, too!
The site is: http://www.acun.com/dentons The link to the article
about Lorenzo Dow is about half way down the first page.
I hope you enjoy the stories!

My interest in Johnson County concerns the Hitchcock and Cardwell families.
Ira Hitchcock died in Johnson Co, I think about 1850. His wife was Eliza
Barkalow. I don't find a widow Hitchcock there in 1850. Does anyone know
of these people?
Ira's son, Oliver Perry Hitchcock, married Susan Cardwell in 1838 in
Johnson Co. She was a daughter of Nathan Cardwell and Rachael Crows
Will share what I know with anyone interested.
