My great grandfather was John W. Cook, born 1847..He had a brother named William M. Cook.
Their parents were Josiah Cook and Lydia Parker. Lydia died in 1849 and the two boys went
to live with their grandfather Parker. They appear on the 1850 Census in the home of John
Parker, they are aged 3 and 2. The two boys are next found in 1860 living with their
other grandfather Richard Cook, in Texas County, Missouri. Richard moved to Missouri in
1855, possibly to live on land granted for his War of 1812 service.
Missouri was not a good place to be in 1861 when the Civil War starts especially if you
are from Illinois. The two Cook boys are next found in Fort Scott, Kansas where they
enlist into the Union Cavalry. After the war they fight Indians and then return to Jackson
County. John then marries Sarah E. Lindsey. He later marries his first cousin Rebecca
I have all this info in John Cook's Civil War Pension file. If this is the Cook family
you are researching I will be glad to share.
