Betty, I have some info on the Vance boys. My great grandfather Henry
Gilbreath (nephew of Andrew Whitney Vance, who was known in the family as
Whitney, although they were really contemporaries and both served in Co. K
5th IL Inf.) was the guardian of Edson Whitney, Samuel Luther, and John D.
Vance for a while.
According to Matilda Vance's pension application, their children were:
Edson Whitney, b. 24 April 1857
Johh Dan, b. 24 May 1859
Joe Albert, b. 17 May 1861
Samuel L. , b. 20 Dec. 1864
Joseph Albert died 28 Sept. 1867 in DeSoto IL, according to an 1872 affadavit
by Edson Whitney Vance. At that time the whereabouts of his youngest brother
Samuel L. was unknown. (Henry was made his guardian in 1875, but was guardian
of the 2 others much earlier.) Samuel L. was with Matlila and her husband
Isaac Vineyard when they left. Henry stated that the 2 others were abandoned
by their mother.
In 1880 John D. Vance was on the Rockwood, Randolph Co. census with my great
grand uncle Marion Gilbreath, brother of Henry. (By that time Henry and his
family had removed to Kansas.) He was listed as a boarder, 21 years old, a
The same census lists Luther Vance, age 15, with his grandparents Dr. Wm. and
Chloe Vance, also in Rockwood. This must be Samuel Luther.
Matilda O. Vineyard died 3 Sept. 1873, I think (my copy is very faint).
Do you know of a brother of Wm. Vance who was in the California goldfields in
the 1860's? I just found a note in the papers of Thomas Howell Holmes (he mar
ried Isabella, the sister of Henry Gilbreath) that Wm. Vance's brother wrote
(belatedly) of the death of my great great grandfather John Randolph
Gilbreath in California. This was the only notification the family received.
John R. left his wife and 5 children in Wisconsin and disappeared in
California. His wife was Caroline A., the daughter of Chloe Whitney Vance by
her first husband, Jerry Hll. Caroline later moved to Rockwood and married
Horace VanMeter. John R. Gilbreath alive in 1862, six years after his wife
and family had given him up for dead! (This according the bounty land
