I'm a professional genealogist in Carbondale. I would suggest first going to the John
A. Logan College Library near Carterville where the Genealogical Society of Southern
Illinois houses their collection. There are many books of compiled records for Union
County there. Indexes can be checked and the books can be worked through much more
quickly than you could searching at the courthouse. If you find something significant in
the books and want a copy of the actual document, you will find the staff at the Union
county courthouse welcoming. They also respond quickly to mail requests in my experience.
An easier option than going to the courthouse might be visiting IRAD at SIU Carbondale on
McLafferty Rd. for copies of the original documents or to research. The list of what is
there for Union County can be found online. Note that both the library at John A. Logan
and IRAD are not open on weekends at this time. Good luck, and if you need further
suggestions feel free to con!
