The 1880 census record for James P. EAST lists his father as born in France.
The 1850 and 1860 census records for the father (Thomas EAST) list Thomas as
born in South Carolina.
I have some information on the EAST family in my SHAWCROSS gedcom file.

Looking for information on Thomas East, who was in Jackson County, Ill.,
by 1818 and died after 1860. His wife was Delilah ? According to 1850 and
1860 censues, he was born in South Carolina about 1799.
But, according to bio from Jackson County, he was born in France and
stowed away on a boat in 1801. According to the listing in the 1870 Census
for his son, James P. East, he was born in France.
Where's the truth?
I know of 4 children--James, my GGgrandfather, John Jefferson, Singleton,
and Lucinda Ellen.
