Article Description: Obit of Ator, Helen (Griffith)
Helen (Griffith) Ator, 80, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at the St. Carmel East
Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Helen was born in Hannibal, Mo. Jan. 18, 1927 to Clifford and Maggie Smith Griffith. She
is the youngest of eight children. Helen married Smith Thomas Ator in Feb. 17, 1954 and he
preceded her in 1982 and they were married for 25 years. Helen was at her daughter's
home in Reynoldsburg, Ohio when she suffered a severe stroke, then taken to the hospital
in Columbus. Her family and friends will remember Helen for her kindness, her love for her
family, and her colorful ways. Though we will miss her greatly, we know she is now
rejoicing in the presence of God.
Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Lynn (Ator) Hawley of Reynoldsburg,
Ohio; two sisters, Pauline Stafford of Virginia, and Doris Elliott of Nevada; and one
brother, Howard Griffith of Virginia; four grandchildren; and three great granddaughters.
She was preceded by her husband, Smith Thomas Ator; two brothers, Truman and Russell; and
two sisters, Sister Catherine and Frances.
Helen's life was being celebrated and remembered in a memorial service at the Niebur
Funeral Home in Pittsfield 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, with Rev. Linda Peyla, Pastor First
United Methodist Church in Pittsfield officiating. Burial was at the West Cemetery in
