Judy. My name is Jon Shallop and are you a relative of the Shallop family. Henry Shallop
(Schallopp is his birth name) is in my family tree. For example, here is some detail about
one of his daughters, Emma Shallop. She was a graduate of Western Oregon Normal School as
US Census 1930: for Kelso, Cowlitz County, Washington; Emma W. Shallop age 24 (s), is a
lodger at the home of Lucia A. Jenkins age 60 (s) who is a public school principal; born
in Iowa. Her father was born in New York and her mother in Illinois. Emma is listed as
born in Idaho and she is a public school teacher. This agrees with her suspected
graduation from Western Oregon College of Education in Monmouth in 1925 (have proof). Her
father is listed as born in Germany and her mother in Pennsylvania which strongly suggests
that her mother was Gertrude M. Another teacher is boarding at the same house. Her name is
LuLu Pakestraw age 36 (s). She was born in CO, her father in Iowa and mother in Kansas.
So now we have traced Emma to Kelso WA in 1930 and she is working as a public school
teacher. Kelso is about 40 miles north of Portland. We have additional notes from
newspaper clippings regarding Emma. On Jan 4, 2011 I talked with Whitney at the Western
Oregon University Registrars!
Office. She confirmed that Emma W. Shallop received her diploma in education in the
class of 1926! Whitney will try to find the original transcript for Emma and I now have
copy of her graduation program. I have also visited Kelso WA and obtained several photos
of Emma when she was teaching at Kelso High School 1929-1931. Let me know if you want
more details. Jon
