I have recently been given the family book that relates the story of my
Great-Grandfather John Simpson who was born in Co Antrim Ireland circa 1840.
The book reports an account, from Moscow Idaho, that he had married, left a
wife and 3 children destitute, when he died circa 1883 (aged 43) from
exposure and starvation after rescue. He had been prospecting in the local
hills. His family send money form Ireland but nothing more was heard.
John had earlier fought in the ranks in the Civil War on the Union side then
moved into the commissariat branch. After the war he moved to Fort Griffin
TX, as a Sutler, and survived numerous Indian attacks on his pack trains.
He settled in the Moscow area after 3 months trek from Austin Texas via
Any help appreciated.
