HI Doug
I don't know if you are aware of it or not, but
2-3 years ago the Idaho Legislature passed a very
annoying law. The ISHS has death certs on micofilm
through 1937, but after that they have to be ordered
from DHW ($10.00 each). The law now says that says
DHW can only release death certs to "Direct
Decendents" Which puts researchers in the position of
lying on the app or not getting the info. Frankly, I
don't see that that law does any good and penalizes
honest folks.
Therefore, I am going to write to my legislators and
ask that they either rescind or change the law. And,
I am also going to ask that they direct DHW to send
all death certs older than 10-20 years (or whatever
they are comfortable with) to the ISHS either on
microfilm or cd so we can have access to them. After
all, we can get a lot of the info on them from the
SSDI--at at cost of $27.50 and the SSDI doesn't
require relationship proof. The obits also have a lot
of it, so I don't know why there has to be so much
secrecy about the certs.
I don't know if it will do much good (you know how
well the legislature listens to the voters), but am
going to give it a try. If you agree or know anyone
who does, will you ask them to write also?
Thanks,
Vicki
