For those who are still on the Rootsweb/Ancestry server, there's been a
change on those top banners. It seems to have a search engine that seems to
confuse researcher to your own search engine that search only your site.
Here's a solution by Joy Fisher:
For those who have sites on rootsweb, please note that they are starting to
implement a new branding banner complete with a search box in the upper
left hand corner. It is causing confusion among our visitors who think it
will search our USGW site, but instead takes them straight to their
pay-per-view site.
Back in 2008 our NC negotiated a separate banner just for USGW sites. So
far there is no search box in it You can see a sample here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mnmeeker/
Here is what you need to do to get the USGW banner:
Open notepad and create a file with the word
USGENWEB
all caps and nothing else.
save it as banner_select.txt
Notice no caps in the file name!!
upload to your public_html directory
delete the .txt part in your directory name so the file is named
banner_select
ta-dah no more search box, but you are still branded as being part of
ancestry
Thank you,
Matt
