Hunt, Linda Lawrence. -- "Bold Spirit/Helga Estby's Forgotten Walk." Univ.
of Idaho Press, Moscow, Idaho.
In 1896 Mrs. Estby, age 36, & one teenage daughter walked from Spokane, Washington, to
New York City? to promote the "bicycle skirt". The designer or producer of skirt
was offering big bucks to any woman who made the walk. Estbys were on verge of loosing
family farm, so Mrs. Estby made walk. The promotors renigned & they had to make their
own way home. While they were gone, younger children came down with diptheria & were
quarantined. Family blamed the mother & were ashamed of her. Her journals were later
destroyed by her children. The local museum has found newspaper article abt her, when she
came thru Gem Co.
George, Susanne E. --"The Adventures of The Woman Homesteader,
The Life and Letters of Elinore Pruitt Stewart." University of Nebraska
Press, 1992. Elinore and her husband "The Stewart" homesteaded adjacent tracts
in southwest Wyoming at an elevation of 7000 feet -- that's more than twice the
elevation of Ola. Mrs. Stewart wrote for publication and kept up a life-long
correspondence with many people and those letters have been preserved.
Pratt, Alice Day. ---"A Homesteader's Portfolio/the rare story
of a single woman homesteader in the dry-land west". Oregon State
University Press, 1993. Alice Pratt Day homesteaded in Central Oregon and was
raising chickens. She brought the first incubator into the area. Molly Gloss,
who wrote the introduction, has also written a novel based loosely on Day's
experiences, although I found the true account to be better.
Jenkins, Malinda. ---"Gambler's Wife/the life of Malinda
Jenkins". University of Nebraska Press, 1998. Mrs. Jenkins was not a
homesteader, but her story is the story of a woman making a living in the west
-- and all over the west -- before the turn of last century. Before finally
settling down in California, the Jenkins had a ranch in Malheur County, Oregon,
and there is a chapter on horse-racing in Boise.
(I have identified six women homesteaders in Gem Co. but I suspect that is a fraction of
actual nos.)
Zanjani, Sally. "A mine of her own/women prospectors in the American West
1850-1950." Univ. of Nebraska Press, 1997. One brief mention of Idaho; primarily
Nevada women.

Subject: [IDGENWEB] Week 2 - Roll Call November 11, 2011
Good Day Idahoans!
Another week has past and it’s roll call day. If you haven’t done so for
the month of November, do so now. The sooner your presents are known the
less we see of these emails. <smile>
I hoped that all is well in your neck of the woods. It’s getting cooler
here but spurts of warm air for a day or so. Nonetheless, we’ll be heading
into the winter season before too long. I’ve been busy this week with my
first week of graduate program. I’m taking mostly history classes, of
course, that’s all I’ll be taking since my major will be in history.
<smile> This week has been introduction week and a few reading assignment
for next week. I’m taking a women’s history class. If you have any books,
journals, diary of your Idahoans pioneering women, I would love to read
about their experience of life in their time. Any good Idahoan Women's
history reading?
I haven’t done much with the website for it’s been quiet. We’ve had a
couple of IDGenweb patrons join our facebook group. Nice people! If you
haven’t joined our facebook group we could use your support. (URL:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/idgenweb/) I will be adding some more to
the Idaho Archives this weekend, most likely. There will be some new items
for Ada, Alturas, Blaine, Boise, Gem and Gooding counties, these will be
adding by Sunday in the evening or sooner. Keep in mind to use our archives
as a backup of your data. Folks don’t forget to use our mailing list for
help from the others. Of course, I am here too. <grin>
Well I hope you all have a great weekend and thanks for your support.
