I suspect he's referring to the present building, which once again has gone thru major
renovations & a lot of buried stuff has been dusted off & displayed. The Idaho
Historical Society pic in "Discovering Idaho, a history" by Dwight William
Jensen, shows a very small bldg with a false front as the first capitol in Lewiston. That
was for only one year.
Seems like I've read that the reason Lewiston was first chosen as capitol was to make
it convenient for the first Territorial Governor Wallace who lived downstream, in
Washington. I thought that was in the "Idaho Almanac", but I'm not finding
it again & the folks up north may have a different version.
One of my favorite quotes from the "Idaho Almanac": The story of the territorial
governors reads not like a whodunit, but like a whodidn't. Sixteen governors were
appointed by presidents between 1863 and statehood 27 yrs later. Five of the governors
never set foot in Idaho . .
An interesting site for Idaho history is
http://sfcompanion.blogspot.com/ -- this fellow
seems to just follow his interest, sometimes in one part of the state & sometimes in
another.
Also, The Idaho Statesman has archived its history articles at

Subject: [IDGENWEB] Trivia Questions: Old Capitol Building
This is for those who might know some facts about the "old Capitol building"
in Boise. According to Hawley's 1920 History of Idaho, it states:
"In commemoration of the services of the Idaho regiment a magnificent bronze
tablet was ordered by the state and placed at the entrance of the OLD
CAPITOL BUILDING in Boise, and thereon is engraved the names of the
thirty-four sons of Idaho who were killed in action or died in the service
..."
Do you suppose Hawley was referring to the original Capitol in Lewiston or
the current Capitol that was built in 1890 and restored? Do any one know if
this memorial tablets still exist? Where is it?
I hope this isn't too trival!
